The Squamish language is a Coast Salish language, spoken and centred in communities in and around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Once considered “nearly extinct”, in 2010 the Squamish language was declared the official language of the Squamish people by its Chief and Council. This declaration was made to ensure funding for the language and its revitalization.
