The Voice of Her Ancestors

Posted on June 27, 2014

Aboriginal Tourism BC’s latest television commercial features the usual stunning footage of our Aboriginal cultural experiences; but it also has a very special and unique soundtrack. For the ad spot — that will air on CTV and elsewhere — AtBC recruited the unique voice of Kaylana Hazelman-Charlie, whose ancestral name is Skwiamathal.

The 6-year-old girl is a member of the Squamish Nation and her lineage is also comprised of Sto:lo, Musqueam and Fijian. The talented young singer conjures up the voices of her ancestors for the clip, as she intones a traditional Coast Salish (Sto:lo) song that accompanies the superb cinematography and is complemented by a stirring Aboriginal drumbeat.
