I-Hos Night Market and Kumugwe Dancers Performance
On August 2nd and 3rd from 3pm to 9pm the K’ómoks First Nation invites you to bring the whole family to their original K’ómoks Village site for the I-Hos Night Market. Savour some of their amazing traditional cuisine! Their tasty bannock cooked fresh on site and spread with berry jams is a must for you to taste. It is a recipe has been handed down from generation to generation with a few tweaks here and there. Wild sockeye salmon is available in two ways, candied-smoked salmon using a secret recipe and salmon skews in a lemon and pepper marinade.
The Kumugwe Dancers will be dancing in the Big House on the Sunday evening. Exhibiting pride in their traditional songs and dance, this group of dancers, drummers and singers is a favourite in their homeland of the Comox Valley. Kumugwe Dancers take great pride in preserving the ancient traditions of their ancestors. Through sharing the songs and dances of the K’ómoks and Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, the Kumugwe Dancers feel that they are able to help facilitate respect and understanding within the local community and communities abroad. Taking their name from the traditional Big House that sits within the heart of the K’ómoks First Nation, member of the dance troupe have been practicing and performing together since 2001.The Kumugwe Dancers feel that by encouraging young members of their community to learn the ancient songs and dances of their people, they will ensure the survival of the culture for generations to come. Tickets to attend the Kumugwe Dancers’ performance at the Big House on Sunday, August 3rd, are by donation.
The I-Hos Night Market will also have Artisans on site displaying a variety of wares to sell. There will be many unique and creative items to delight your senses. One group of vendors is the Wachiay Friendship Centre Youth Program. This year the youth learned the silk-screening art process and will be doing public demonstrations. The youth will also have prints to give away and a few items to sell so come out and support the next generation of artists!
