Land Guardian Program

The Land Guardian Program, delivered by Natural Resources Training Group (NRTG), is a five-week (200-hour) training experience designed to prepare individuals for rewarding learnings in environmental stewardship and cultural interpretation, perfect for tourism organizations. With the growing demand for skilled Land Guardians in tourism, conservation, and community-based monitoring, this program equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to welcome and guide visitors while protecting and preserving the natural and cultural landscapes they explore and live in.

This immersive program blends engaging online lectures, realistic case studies, applied field training, and daily hands-on exercises conducted in your local area. Each day includes a morning online session with experienced NRTG instructors, followed by instructor-guided fieldwork and reflection in the afternoon.

Graduates of the program are prepared for entry-level roles such as Land Guardians, Watchmen, Eco-Tourism Guides and Environmental Monitors - positions vital to sustainable tourism and land management.

Online training, Monday to Friday, November 3rd to December 5th 2025 - registration closes October 1st, 2025.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
  1. Apply observe, record, report, and protect skills required by land guardians.
  2. Monitor and assess soils, plants, aquatic conditions, and wildlife.
  3. Interpret information to contribute to the management of the environment.
  4. Participate in environmental protection in your territory.
Requirements All students attending must have the following items daily:
  • Electronic device (computer, laptop, or tablet) with a stable Wi-Fi connection (classes are held online via Zoom)
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather
Eligibility  Indigenous Tourism BC will cover the full costs of this training for eligible participants:
  • Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Metis) residing in BC
  • Indigenous-owned tourism businesses (51%+ Indigenous ownership), and employees of
