Sports & Reconciliation
Sport has long been a source of strength, identity, and connection for Indigenous Peoples. Today, it also helps advance reconciliation.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 87 calls for greater awareness of Indigenous histories, recognition of Indigenous athletes, and meaningful inclusion in sport.
During National Indigenous History Month, we invite you to learn how sport can bring people together and help build understanding across cultures.
More than just a Game: “I don’t think soccer ever has been just a game for me,” says Lacey Baker of the role soccer has played in her life. Meet Lacey Baker, a proud member of the Squamish Nation, who was inspired by the Indigenous women mentors who organized soccer in her community when she was young. Lacey carried those teachings through international competition and now works to pass them on to the next generation.
You came for soccer. Experience Indigenous BC while you’re here.
We invite visitors to go beyond the match and connect with Indigenous cultures through food, art, performances, cultural centres, events, and unforgettable land-based experiences.
