Bear Awareness
This Bear Awareness course provided by Canada Safety Training helps you stay safe while working or spending time in nature. It teaches you how to understand bear behaviour, spot signs of their presence and avoid unsafe situations. Whether you’re guiding tours, protecting the land or working in the outdoors, this training gives you the skills to respond calmly and confidently in bear country. You’ll learn how to prevent bear encounters, what to do if one happens, and how to use bear spray safely. This training is important for keeping both people and bears safe. By learning these skills, you help protect yourself, your team and your guests – and show respect for the land and wildlife that support our communities.

Who Should Attend?
This course is made for Indigenous peoples working in tourism who want to strengthen their health and safety knowledge – especially in outdoor recreation, guiding or land guardian roles. It’s a great fit for anyone who spends time in nature.
Session Details
This is an online, self-paced course, so you can take your time. Go through the material when it works for you—there’s no rush, and you can stop and come back as needed.
Eligibility
Indigenous Tourism BC will cover the full costs of this training for eligible participants:
- Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Metis) residing in BC
- Indigenous-owned tourism businesses (51%+ Indigenous ownership), and employees of
- First Nations-owned tourism businesses (51%+ First Nations ownership), and employees of
- First Nations Communities in BC
Prerequisites
You don’t need any special training or experience to take this course – just an open mind and a willingness to learn. If you’ve spent time outdoors or know a bit about staying safe on the land, that knowledge will help, but it’s not required. Everyone is welcome.
