Indigenous Tourism British Columbia (ITBC) welcomed a record-breaking number of Indigenous tourism operators, First Nations community members, partners, and allies to the 28th ITBC Indigenous Tourism Gathering and AGM.
This year’s gathering, The Future is Indigenous, was held November 12-14, 2025, at Ch’elxwa7elch (Coal Harbour) on the shared Traditional Territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
The three-day Indigenous Tourism BC Gathering and AGM opened with Rock Your Mocs!, an opening night gathering held at the And-Co Forum in Ch’elxwa7elch. Indigenous tourism operators and friends greeted each other, shared stories and songs, connecting with their peers and ITBC Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialists.
The second day began with the opening protocol on the shared Traditional Territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, as the official 2025 ITBC AGM schedule opened with welcome songs from Nick Kofi (Tsleil-Waututh) and Rebecca Campbell (Musqueam).
ITBC Chair Brenda Baptiste offered welcome remarks and introduced the hosts, ITBC Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialists Nicole Seeley (Vancouver Island) and Rocky Nenka (Cariboo Chilcotin Coast), who served as Masters of Ceremonies for the next two days.
Chief Financial Officer Henry Tso confirmed a quorum of 51 voting members (Tier 3 and Tier 4 Stakeholders), who approved the 2024-2025 Annual Report, Financial Statement, and appointment of auditors.
Official AGM business was followed by a two-day gathering to honour the brilliance of our ancestors’ wisdom by sharing tourism practices that prioritize meaningful connections to the land and to each other, the protection and sharing of our cultures, respect for our Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and the value of and trust in our Youth.
Mo Dawson, a Gitxsan & Dzawada’enuxw Graphic Recorder living and working on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen People, created these dynamic visual summaries that highlighted the key insights, emotions, and action items from the vibrant discussions on Days 2 and 3. They take you on a visual journey that reflects the spirit of the gathering.
Sessions and discussions hosted at The Future is Indigenous included:
Unapologetically Indigenous: Building a business rooted in Indigenous values & culture
Creating in two worlds: Indigenous-led wellness, storytelling, and innovation
Cultural guides and guardians: Training the next generation
BC First Nations-led Tourism Destinations Fund
Welcoming Nations: Tourism’s impact on our Nations
Current ITBC Chair Brenda Baptiste was honoured to present the Indigenous Tourism BC Legacy Award to Chief Dr. Sophie Pierre, respected Ktunaxa elder, long-time leader, and former ITBC Board Chair. Chief Dr. Sophie Pierre worked with the Ktunaxa to transform the painful history of the Kootenay Indian Residential School into a tourism legacy of reconciliation, truth, and community empowerment.
She spent nine years in the former residential institution. She later championed its rebirth as St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, a living place of culture and language, and a thriving tourism and economic development project by and for the Ktunaxa Nation. Chief Dr. Sophie Pierre has also received the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada for her decades of service and advocacy.
This session included the announcement of ITBC’s newly elected board members, led by Chief Electoral Officer Allison Colthorp. ITBC thanked returning Board of Directors members for their dedicated service and welcomed all new members to the House of Tyee.
We are grateful to departing board members Jenna Bower (At-large, Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre) and Leslie Brown (Northern BC Region, Davidson’s Descendants) for their outstanding service and ongoing commitment to wellbeing for First Nations and Indigenous Peoples in BC through tourism.
